Successful professionals are effective communicators in any situation. Joana Story, Scientific Coordinator of the Effective Communication Program, explains why.

The importance of personal communication at work is obvious. We are hired, promoted and fired for several reasons, but the image that we give to our colleagues, teams, and managers is one of the most important reasons. And that image - or even a personal brand - is conveyed by the way we communicate.
Many people are wrong to think that the communication process is simple. Communication, in fact, is not just talking; it is to convey an idea in a clear way for the target audience to understand. Several studies even indicate that 70% of our communication is non-verbal! However, as a rule, we are not trained to control our movements or even our active listening.
As a top management school, it is essential that Nova SBE presents in its training portfolio a communication program for executives. A study by a US colleague shows that a mediocre manager spends 29% of his time communicating (transmitting information), 19% networking, 20% developing human resources and 32% in traditional management tasks. A successful manager has values like 28% for communication, 48% for networking, 11% for HR and 13% for management tasks. An effective manager spends 44% communicating, 11% networking, 26% in HR activities and 19% in management tasks.
In this intensive and extremely practical two-day program, we learned communication as an effective way to deal (and lead) with human resources in terms of development and to transmit information in a simple and clear way.
Therefore, by improving our communication skills and recognizing its importance, we can be better collaborators and better managers.
Why not?
Still, the work done in the classroom is just a start and the tools must be adopted on a daily basis. Communication has to be practiced and worked on every day, and constantly improved depending on the feedback (direct or not) we receive.
We all know when communication is not effective: mistakes and their serious consequences that were often unintentional, the result of a “misunderstanding”, missed opportunities and frustration - which can lead to team conflict, bullying, and burnout. On the other hand, effective communication is the key to achieve our individual and professional goals, generating excellent results with a positive impact.
The more we practice the tools the better results we will get in the long run. Communication can become more natural and the "rules", that can be applied in the beginning in a slightly more forced way, can be - and will be - internalized. Therefore, this program is just a start: but it is an important first step in evaluating, challenging and obtaining support tools.
